Mower County Humane Society

The goal was to choose a non-profit and executing the user experience and user interface design process. We had to work as a group to create a high-fidelity responsive web design solution.

To achieve this goal, focus was applied to:

  • UI Analysis & User Research

  • Information Architecture

  • Lo-Fi Wireframing & Testing

  • Hi-Fi Prototyping & Style

  • Interactive Design

Mission Statement

Provide care and shelter to homeless dogs and cats from Mower County, Minnesota until they can be placed in responsible forever homes, and to  reduce the number of unwanted, homeless dogs and cats in Mower County, Minnesota by promoting, facilitating, and sponsoring spaying and neutering activities.

Proto-Persona

To begin, we hypothesized on who might visit this site. After conducting interviews and affinitizing the data, we created our user Lola Johnson.

Lola may visit the site to research dogs because she wants to give a dog a loving home.. Although, she’s not looking forward to the lengthy adoption process and paperwork, and she’s worried about the animal’s history, she wants to avoid dog breeders.

Heuristic Evaluation

We conducted a heuristic evaluation of the site and found usability issues. We found that the site lacked depth and is very basic.

Research Plan

User Research.png

We conducted interviews to determine how people go about adopting animals in need. We found their pain points with researching the animal(s), as well as the process, including paperwork.

Journey Map

Based on our research, we determined the journey Lola and her family would take to add a pet to their family - from the point where they decided to adopt through the humane society versus using a breeder until they’ve finalized the paperwork.

Usability Testing

Usability Test.png

After reviewing our research, we determined the user would most likely search for a dog on the website based on their needs, then fill out the application. We mocked up sketches for our users o test. Based on the tests, our users were able to pass five of the six tasks successfully 100% of the time.

Desktop Prototype

We came up with our final prototype based on critical feedback from our different usability testing.

In addition to improving the website that could lead to more adoption awareness, increase adoption rates and highlight the need for more volunteers, our goal was to modernize the look of the website.

Conclusion

In conclusion, there are a lot of ways to make the adoption process easier people. Streamlining the paperwork and making it easier to identify an animal’s personality traits a play key role in helping potential adopters easily identify an animal that would best fit their home and lifestyle.

Our next steps include having more in-depth conversations with the stakeholders to learn more about their applications and application needs, add the ability for the site user to create an account so their able to save favorite animals and save their application. Also, add more refined filtering for the animal pages.
